Sunrise Medical’s Empulse R90 Offers Long-Range Power Assist

The Empulse R90 is a new long-range power assist option from Sunrise Medical that mounts under both rigid and folding wheelchairs. You control the device with a push button control box that connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and attaches to your wheelchair frame. There is currently no option for a hardwired control, which may be a concern for those worried about the safety of Bluetooth control

One unique feature of the Empulse R90 compared to other under-chair power assists like Permobil SmartDrive or SMOOV one is that you have the option to raise the drive wheel to reduce resistance when pushing manually. Also, the Empulse R90 has removable batteries with either 2.5 amp-hours or 5 amp-hours of capacity, so you can purchase an extra battery to swap out for additional range. The smaller battery has a 9.8-mile range and is approved for airline travel. The larger battery has a 19.5-mile range but isn’t approved for air travel.

You can customize the settings on the device with the Sunrise Intelligence app, which allows you to create custom profiles for different environments, set maximum speeds, monitor battery usage, and track performance statistics.

“All these features make the R90 easy to use, but the real highlight is its versatility,” said Bernd Krebs, chief technology officer at Sunrise Medical. “We did extensive field testing, and our riders enjoyed the great maneuverability, compactness and range, as well as the wheel-up function.”

The Empulse R90 has a starting price of $7,300. For more information, visit Sunrise Medical
