Couch to 5K (C25K) sounds trendy, but the original, free-to-use app was created in 1996 by an American software developer who hoped to help his mom, a new runner, stay motivated by maintaining manageable expectations. Now one of the most popular exercise programs in the world, the plan aims to get the user working out for 20 to 30 minutes, three days a week. The daily workouts start with a five-minute warmup walk and work up to running five kilometres (without a walking break) within nine weeks.

C25K is structured, doable for many new runners, and designed to prevent burnout and injuries—two of the biggest reasons new runners quit. There’s no need to memorize the walk/run ratio of each workout before you head out the door, either—that app features a trainer that guides you through every run and cues you when to pick up the pace, or dial it back a notch.
