Two world records go down at Millrose Games

The 2025 Millrose Games in New York delivered an unforgettable night of racing on Saturday, as two world records fell within the span of an hour. Yared Nuguse rewrote history in the Wanamaker Mile, while Grant Fisher stunned in the 3,000m.

Nuguse soars to indoor world mile record

Nuguse didn’t just win the Wanamaker Mile—he rewrote the record books. Clocking a stunning 3:46.63, the 24-year-old American surpassed Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha’s previous indoor mile record of 3:47.01, set in 2019.

With world champion Josh Kerr sidelined due to illness, the race still delivered fireworks. Paced through 1,000m in 2:20.49 by Abe Alvarado, Nuguse led the charge over the final laps, with Hobbs Kessler hot on his heels. The two tore through 1,500m in 3:31.75, a mark that shattered Nuguse’s own North American record. Holding strong down the final straight, Nuguse edged out Kessler, who also dipped under the previous record in 3:46.90.

Nuguse, who set an American outdoor 1,500m record last year, continues to prove he’s one of the most versatile milers in the world. At just 19, Cam Myers of Australia also made history, setting a world U20 record of 3:47.48, while France’s Azeddine Habz clocked a national record of 3:47.56.

Fisher takes down world 3,000m record

Less than an hour before Yuguse’s historic win, fellow American Fisher delivered his own masterpiece in the men’s 3,000m, becoming the first man in history to break 7:23 indoors. In a showdown with Olympic 1,500m champion Cole Hocker, Fisher bided his time before making his decisive move off the final bend, surging to a 7:22.91 victory—surpassing Ethiopian runner Lamecha Girma’s 7:23.81 world indoor record from 2023.

Hocker, who had taken the lead with three laps to go, also broke the previous record, finishing in 7:23.14. The double Olympic bronze medallist Fisher also holds American records from the 3,000m to 10,000m.

Canadians runners shine

Audrey Leduc of Gatineau, Que., ran to a PB in the women’s 60m event, finishing seventh in 7.20; Jacious Sears of the U.S. won the race in 7.02. 25-year-old Leduc is the Canadian record holder in the 100m and 200m events, both set in 2024. Fellow Canadian Simone Plourde of Montreal, Que., narrowly missed capturing a PB (4:24.67) in the women’s Wannamaker Mile, taking eighth place in 4:25.71.
