The best do-it-all training shoes

Many of us have a quiver of specialized running shoes for specific training. Yet, if pressed, most runners will admit it would be great to have one pair of shoes that could do it all–easy training runs, speedwork and even racing.

If you are like us and looking for that special do-it-all unicorn shoe, look no further. Here’s our list of some of our favourite do-it-all shoes for spring 2025.

Best for runners seeking a responsive, cushioned shoe for fast workouts and longer runs

Brooks Hyperion Max 2

Brooks Hyperion Max 2

A propulsive shoe with excellent cushioning

The new Hyperion Max 2 manages to hit a compelling running sweet spot by delivering enough responsiveness and propulsion for fast workouts while still retaining the cushioning necessary for longer daily runs. Brooks has achieved this by updating the Hyperion Max 2 with a new midsole construction that features a Pebax SpeedVault plate for additional propulsion. The midsole also employs Brooks’ DNA Flash v2 foam, which is 10 per cent more responsive. These updates, combined with the shoe’s RapidRoll Rocker geometry, deliver exceptional cushioning, increased responsiveness and faster heel-to-toe transitions. The stack height has also been increased by 4 mm in the heel and 6 mm in the forefoot for extra softness and protection. While midsole updates may get most of the attention, it would be unfair to ignore the Hyperion Max 2’s new upper. Constructed with an engineered mesh, the new upper offers exceptional fit and breathability. If you are looking for a versatile shoe for fast workouts and longer runs, look no further.

Best for runners seeking a versatile shoe for daily training, speedwork, and racing

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4

A nylon-plated propulsive shoe

The updated Endorphin Speed 4 delivers more of the performance that made the previous iteration so popular with so many runners. Featuring a propulsive nylon plate and Saucony’s PWRRUN PB foam, the Endorphin Speed 4 delivers an incredible combination of cushioning and energy return. The result is a shoe that feels right at home during daily training runs while being sufficiently responsive for speedwork and racing. Saucony has also employed its SPEEDROLL rocker technology, which provides more efficient heel-to-toe transitions–something runners will appreciate during faster workouts. The upper has been subjected to a similar level of attention, and showcases a new engineered mesh that securely holds your foot while also noticeably improving breathability. From a numbers perspective, the Endorphin Speed 4 clocks in with a 36 mm stack height in the heel and 28 mm in the forefoot, resulting in a very reasonable (for most runners) 8 mm drop. Whether you’re out logging some easy miles or doing speedwork in preparation for an upcoming race, the Endorphin Pro has got you covered.

Best for runners seeking a versatile, non-carbon-plated, propulsive shoe

New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4

New Balance Fuel Cell Rebel v4

A responsive, lightweight, neutral shoe with a propulsive feel

With its sophisticated foam midsole that combines peba and EVA, the Rebel V4 delivers a propulsive ride without the cost associated with traditional carbon-plated supershoes. The result is a responsive shoe that is suitable for tempo runs, daily training and long runs–it really is that versatile. The Rebel v4’s performance is further enhanced, thanks to its extreme lightness (168 g for a women’s 7 and 212 g for a men’s 9.5). Many runners will also appreciate the additional 2.5 mm of stack height (30 mm in the heel and 24 mm in the forefoot), which provides more protection and cushioning, which are especially welcome during longer runs. New Balance should also be commended for bringing back the Fantom Fit upper. Consisting of an engineered mesh that’s made by fusing two pieces of thin material, the Fantom Fit upper provides a lightweight and supportive, foot-hugging fit. Finally, for the outsole, New Balance has wisely chosen to use durable rubber in strategically chosen high-wear areas. The approach ensures excellent wear without excessive weight.
